Never Satisfied, Hardly Living???

Why is it always more, more, more? More things, more friends, more activities, more money, more work, more technology.... Always striving, comparing - but rarely satisfied or happy.

I find myself constantly measuring myself up, finding myself lacking, and envying the lives of others. Not happy to be still, not happy to be active, scared of wasting time - definitely not living in the present and not enjoying the gift of life.

Every day is an internal struggle - minding what i say, minding what i do, trying to control the internal dialog. Working to be fair - although first instinct is to be judgemental. Frustrated by seeing my own faults in others.

An imperfect being trying to be PERFECT.

What a Mess!

Harry Potter Wisdom

Living in Alaska can often feel quite isolating when you are not a fundamentalist Christian or far right leaning Republican. Sometimes change and understanding seem so far away and unattainable. Recently, I found some consolation in the following discussion between Harry Potter and Luna Lovegood from the Order of the Phoenix movie. The movie is based on the children's novel of the same name by J.K. Rowling.

Luna Lovegood: [about her father] We believe you, by the way. That He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is back, and you fought him, and the Ministry and the Prophet are conspiring against you and Dumbledore.
Harry Potter: Thanks. Seems you're about the only ones that do.
Luna Lovegood: I don't think that's true. But I suppose that's how he wants you to feel.
Harry Potter: What do you mean?
Luna Lovegood: Well if I were You-Know-Who, I'd want you to feel cut off from everyone else. Because if it's just you alone you're not as much of a threat.

This reminds me not to despair and and to take heart. I remember there are supportive and loving people who are thoughtful and fair minded. I am thankful they are here for me during the times when living in Alaska can be most challenging.

There you go again... Jerry Prevo Anti Gay Propaganda

I never thought I would be quoting Ronald Reagen, but I've done so twice in the last month. This must be some kind of personal milestone!

Jerry Prevo has again outdone himself in perpetuating hate and fear in Anchorage. He has a new website, which is featured on Channel 2 news. This is a counter attack on a local ordinance that may be approved that protects gay. lesbian and transgendered people against discrimination in housing and employment opportunities.

The website highlights atrocious pictures of cross dressed men and threatens people with the prospect of finding the opposite sex in the same bathroom and gay men seducing Boy Scouts.

If Mr Prevo truly cared about all God's children, he wouldn't be so deceptive and hurtful. This recent attack on the gay and lesbian community is so over the top - that it is actually funny. I encourage you to check out his website. And don't forget to leave a donation at the door.

Abortion - Positive Action

It's an easy thing to say you are against abortion and it is even easier still to try to push your beliefs on someone else using legal means. What is hard, is to demonstrate your beliefs through Positive action.

What do I mean by Positive action? I don't mean carrying signs in front of abortion clinics, collecting signatures on petitions, lobbying state and federal representatives, or taking oaths of abstinence. Positive action is about saying Yes.

Positive Action means taking responsibility and truly exercising your faith and beliefs. If you do these things, then maybe you have the right to truly call yourself Pro-Life. Otherwise, you are just another person that is willing to judge others while leaving your own house in disarray.
  • Be willing to pay taxes to support family services
  • Volunteer to help support un-wed mothers - provide respot, finanacial and emotional support
  • Adopt minority children and /or foster children
  • Volunteer and commit to Big Brothers / Big Sisters
  • Support and fund Child and Family services
  • Support full funding for headstart - a proven program that delivers results that is always on the verge of being cut.
  • Practice your faith - by giving directly to those in need, especially if they are your enemies. You might find that you actually love them.

Until all people are willing to support their beliefs by taking Positive action, there will be no change. Consider your choice - what will it be be?

Welcome to the Alaskan Minority Report

My blog title is taken from the movie Minority Report. The film is based on a short story written by Philip K Dick, a well known and revered science fiction author. The story revolves around how a witness's perception of a crime can be limited by their perspective. If the witness's perspective is flawed, justice and truth are no longer served.

The majority of witnesses may share a flawed perspective while a single individual may be the only one that sees the event in its entirety. This is called the Minority Report. It is often overlooked or dismissed because the majority rules.

I found this a fitting name for my blog. My aim is to provide the Minority Report.
